The semideciduous low forest conservation project in Komchen de los pájaros natural protected area and its influential zone

2019-2022 REPORT AND PROJECTIONS

TThe number of plants in Mexico under some category of risk has increased in recent years, from 894 species, subspecies or varieties in NOM-059-ECOL-1994 to 981 in NOM-059-ECOL-2001 and 994 in NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010. In the state of Yucatan, primary forests have almost disappeared, the low deciduous forest is the ecosystem that has suffered the most from the loss of its vegetation cover and currently there are remnants mostly in a secondary state (Duno de Stefano et al.2017).

The dominant type of vegetation in the private protected area "Komchén de los Pájaros" is classified as Low Deciduous Forest (SBC), which has been poorly studied despite the fact that it represents 42% of tropical ecosystems worldwide that are considered threatened. In Yucatan, historically it is due to the clearing of the jungle for the cultivation of henequen and agricultural development; Today, climate change threatens to cause aridity and desertification conditions in already dry lands. The remnants of this forest continue to be lost and fragmented despite being under legislation. The vegetation of SBC is characterized by hosting a large number of endemic species of the region and constitutes the fundamental ecosystem of the private protected natural area (ANP). It is worth mentioning that it is also within the Mesoamerican corridor, which implies a greater responsibility in safeguarding the faunal and floral diversity it contains.

We intend to make "Komchén de los Pájaros" become a reference model in the biocultural conservation efforts of the Low Deciduous Forest, one of the main ecosystems present in the state of Yucatán, and in this way create a bridge between nature and society, which allows the dissemination of the richness and importance of plant resources for the surrounding towns, for the country and finally for this globally threatened ecosystem, as well as the fauna that inhabits it. Research, monitoring and multiplication of those species with some degree of threat, make up the strategic lines to achieve the goal.

Your donation will support:

  • Study, maintenance and monitoring of the forest to guarantee its existence.
  • The construction of a nursery for the propagation of species with emphasis on those that are threatened.
  • Creation of an arboretum for environmental education
  • Fire brigade equipment
