Integral flamingo conservation program
ABSTRACT
In an effort to protect the population of the Caribbean pink flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber) in the Yucatan Peninsula, the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas and Organización Niños y Crías A.C., are jointly developing an Integral Conservation Program, whose main objectives are: a) to ensure the availability of nesting sites; b) to reinforce the protection conditions of the feeding sites; c) to guarantee that both types of sites are provided with fresh water sources from springs; d) to know the demography of the pink flamingo population in the Yucatan Peninsula; e) to study the survival and migratory movements of the flamingo; and f) to promote the importance of protecting this species among the inhabitants of the Yucatan coast.
